Foreign Language and Cultural Studies Program
The Program in National Security Studies (PINSS) emphasizes a strong understanding of foreign culture and ability to communicate in a foreign language. Our students have studied Spanish in Argentina and Spain, Portuguese in Brazil, Arabic in the United Arab Emirates, and Mandarin Chinese in China.
The 2009 Foreign Language and Cultural Studies program will consist of a four week group trip to Brazil to study Portuguese, to experience cultural aspects of the largest country and economy in South America, and to study security threats, including energy security.
Students will prepare reports on their experiences and emerging security issues in Brazil and will participate in a briefing session with representatives of the US Southern Command Headquarters, in Miami, upon their return. The Foreign Language and Cultural Studies Scholarship Program will cover up to $5,000 of costs for the trip per student.
Applications are not considered complete unless all parts are filled in and submitted by the published deadlines for each program. You are responsible for clearing any and all holds - cashier, financial aid or departmental – in order to be registered for your courses abroad. All accepted students must attend a pre-departure meeting with the Program in National Security Studies (PINSS) and FIU’s Office of Education Abroad (OEA), as well as any program specific pre-departure meetings scheduled by the Program Director. The dates, times and locations of these sessions will be announced. Applicants must be currently enrolled in a Certificate in National Security Studies and actively participating in program activities. Applicants must be US Citizens.
Applications will be accepted from January 5, 2009 through March 9, 2009. A student interview with the Program Director may also be required prior to selection.
Students interested in the Foreign Language and Cultural Immersion Scholarship should contact the institute at (305) 348-2977 or by e-mail for an appointment.
