High School Program in National Security Studies
As an Intelligence Community Center of Academic Excellence (IC CAE) funded by the Office of the Director in National Intelligence (ODNI), one of the goals of the Jack D. Gordon Institute for Public Policy and Citizenship Studies’ (IPPCS), Programin National Security Studies (PINSS) is to raise awareness and increase interest in U.S. national security and international affairs throughout the local community. To that end, the Gordon Institute is pleased to present its High School Program in National Security Studies.
The purpose of this program is to increase Miami-Dade high school students’ interest in National Security and its importance and impact in global, national and local affairs. In doing so, the program is designed to instill a sense of civic responsibility and promote an understanding of the challenges facing U.S. national security in the 21st century.
Each year the Gordon Institute’s High School Program in National Security Studies — in partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools — sponsors several events, including two teacher workshops, two intelligence-security simulations, and a week-long Summer Institute on National Security Studies. Throughout the 2006-2007 academic year PINSS reached out to approximately 250 students and 10 schools from our diverse school system in Miami-Dade County including: Booker T. Washington Senior High, Coral Reef Senior High, Homestead Senior High, Miami Douglas MacArthur South Senior High, Miami Coral Park Senior High, Miami Lakes Educational Center, North Miami Beach Senior High, Robert Morgan Educational Center, South Miami Senior High, and William H. Turner Technical Arts High.
Ultimately, IPPCS’ High School Program in National Security Studies challenges students with complex domestic and international security issues via hands-on intelligence analysis and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) simulations identifying potential national and local terrorist targets. Previous simulations have covered such topics as the Attack on Pearl Harbor, Globalization and Nigerian Oil, Weapons of Mass Destruction in North Korea, and World War II War Crimes.
Students wishing to participate in the High School Program in National Security Studies should contact the Program Outreach Coordinator, Hector Cadavid at (305) 348-2977 or by e-mail for an appointment.
