Bio
Gabriela Hoberman is Assistant Director of Research Programs and Services in the Extreme Events Institute at Florida International University. Dr. Hoberman is a political scientist and researcher who has extensively worked in the study of natural disasters and comparative politics in Latin American and Caribbean countries, specifically in governance, policy, and accountability. Her current research is on the political economy of disasters and politics of disaster, with an emphasis on governance and accountability. Dr. Hoberman is a recipient of a Quick Response Grant from the Natural Hazards Center (NHC) conducting field research in the 2010 Chile’s earthquake and tsunami. She is also Faculty Co-Director for LACC’s Politics & International Relations in Argentina Study Abroad Program, designed to foster an understanding of Latin American international relations with an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the region. Her most recent co-authored articles are (1) “Private sector and disaster risk reduction: The Cases of Bogota, Miami, Kingston, San Jose, Santiago, and Vancouver,” International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction (2015), (2) “Public Response to Disaster Response: Applying the “5C+A” Framework to El Salvador 2001 and Peru 2007,” International Studies Perspectives (2012) and (3) “Establishing Public Accountability, Speaking Truth to Power, and Inducing Political Will for Disaster Risk Reduction: “Ocho Rios+25,”Environmental Hazards (2011). She has presented extensively at international and national conferences as well as contributed with papers and peer reviews for academic journals. Dr. Hoberman obtained her Ph.D. and Master’s degrees in Political Science from the Department of Politics and International Relations at Florida International University.
